Joker Sketch

Did some rough brush splotches and Joker face in the back of the Arkham Madness graphic novel.

Wound up being one of the stronger pieces, probably because i was just goofing around and not trying so hard.

Hollows Trees

As someone asked a while back - yeah, i will post those blank hollows covers with all the trees on them in upcoming posts.

I'll also throw them in Art of Hollows/Mars Attacks" art book i'm working in, (which given all the tree paintings in it, may as  well be subtitled: "Aka: ...lots of goofy sam trees."

New Eleanor Cover

This one's a little different and abstract.

I wanted to have 'strips' of different artistic movements along the top, then have it fade to a simple half penciled image of Eleanor, a suggestion she's drawing own unfinished image.

It may totally not work, but at least it was fun trying something new.  It's a little easier to see the artwork without the logo, so here's that too.

Pin up

I did this pin up for my old pal Chris Wisnia who helped me out on Ojo many years ago.

Be sure and check Chris' cool website out HERE, while your at it . . . for more cool Monster Weirdness.

Freedom of not giving a crap.

An old marvel presents wolvie cover. You can see my timidly trying to add bit of red color in the shadows. Yeah, i knew the red wouldn't print when they scanned the art in black and white.

I just did it at that time,  because fully painting a color cover, still intimated me.

I wouldn't tackle painting until some years later when i started the drawing Maxx, and i surrendered to a freedom Simon Bizley encouraged in me.

Fashion Foibles

The simplicity of minimal design, basic color shapes . . .  help balance out the other styles of art i draw in.

The Red Guy.. with Shoulders.

I will explained why i did this in a future post, but for now...  thought i'd throw it up on the blog for fun.

Mixed Media Purple Guy . . .

. . . the use of bolts and washers,  go way back.

Bimbo: Farnese Hercules Lo

Here's the original black & white version from the Bimbo comic on the left, and an alternate color version of the Lo as the famous Greek Sculpture of Hercules on the right.

I'd love to see a Color version of the Bimbo series too, which is tempting, but I'm probably better off not swimming backwards and instead just finish up Nola.

Victorian stuff

Eleanor has me on this 1900 kick again,

so i thought i'd dig out this old favorite from days-gone-bye.

Z- Girl(s)

Sorry, posting later than usual today.

Funny trivia about Zero girl: Both Amy Smootster, and Nikki (from the second Zero Girl series) were to be part of six girls who had supernatural abilities that sprang from their dysfunctional teen-aged traumas. They were to be called "Z-girls". I know, sounds like a horrible idea, but it was less of a super hero book and more about my usual alienated geeky characters.

Megan, the library girl from Maxx was part of this group too, also Annie from Ojo once she grew older.

I always intended to weave them into Nola mini series, but instead i sent broke Zerogirl off into it's own series instead, which may have been for the best.

What do you guys think?

ALAMO CITY - Comic Con Appearance!

If you missed me at Boston,  here's another chance:

I'll be at Alamo City Comic Con, May 26-28, Sat & Sun only.

Usual rules: no charge for signing comics, but let's try to keep it under 4 books per person, to keep the line moving, okay?

Sorry, i won't be doing any new sketches at the con, but i'll be happy to do a free Maxx Doodle for you ...

...which will look something like this:

Even if you don't have any comics, you can also just stop by and say "hey" too.

: )

Cute little guys

I notice i find an excuse to add cute little "pet" like characters in my stories, like the Isz in the Maxx, little Chibi-like critters.

Then there's the various Pets people own in Eleanor.

Urp, from the Hollows, is like an plump version of an Isz, only with eyes.

3 Different Moms

Here's a series of Moms I've drawn over the years.

Julie's Mom rarely gets stressed, but I've always wondered why she has no nose?

--------

Here's a Mom from the Worlds art book, overly stressing over an impending family gathering.

-------

Lastly the 50's mom from Mars Attacks, Alien Invasions are enough to stress anyone's nerves.

-----

That's it - your done.

Ghost Rider & Were Wolf

Kind of a gimmicky pairing in order to sell a few more funny books in the 90s.

You'll notice i got the bike wrong, so my editor added tape over the original art to fix my goof.

Your favorite Bimbo..

Okay, it's pretty clear most of you liked the Sepia Twout best, and the Blue Eleanor cover better too, so here's another one:

The top Bimbo is a later version, and the bottom one is one from my old sketch book.

Which one do you like better,

Top version  . . .

or Bottom?

I Before E cover.

Here's a rejected 368 Hulk cover, which eventually found it's home as the cover to one of the two I Before E short stories collections.

Another day, another Fashion pic

This one's kinda different.  Although I'm hardly objective, for all i know... my fashion drawings may all look totally alike. : )

But, I enjoy them.

A nice change of pace.

Last Fairy Tale

I'll never understand no idea why, whenever i drew Mr. Gone . . .

. . i kept doing terrible things to his head.

Batman: Secrets, Gallery Edition Book

Speaking of Bat-stuff, Bob Chapman and the good folks at Graphitti Design will be collecting an Original Art Sized collection of my Batman Secrets mini series, plus some of the best pages from a  half dozen other Batman mini series i've done over the years too, including some Lobo and some Scratch pages.

Here's another page that'll be in the book.

Release date is probably sometime in Aug. or Sept.

Here's some press info:

Look, i realize not everybody is gonna wanna pop for this sucker, but for Die-Hard Fans of Big-Assed Original Sized Art Books, just passing word along in advance.

If you've seen Kelly Jones Batman book that Bob did, it's pretty awesome looking too.  So looks like I'll be in pretty good company.

Okay, back to the usual helping of 'free daily pics' to check out.

Betsy

Here's Lo's wife Betsy, from my Inner Bimbo, relaxing on a couch.

This color piece never made it into the finished comic.

Lobo

Hands down Simon's my favorite Lobo artists, but i was lucky enough to draw him a couple of times.

Eleanor page

I like leaving a few panels in a wash or black and white, like this first one.   There's no reason every panel on a page needs color, is there?

This books about a bird that eats artwork, so it's obviously a bit . . .

Quirky.  Goofy.  Weird.
