Watercolor Tree, Phase Four

I hope I don't sound too pretentious in these posts.

Tons of  folks do watercolors, and many are way more talented and skilled than I am.

Despite my artistic limitations,  I'd like to think i might inspire other potential self-taught artists to try new stuff.

If a wonky artists like me can get this far, then imagine what even *more* awesome stuff other artists' will do!

Watercolor Tree, Phase Three

You know, an argument could be made that this tree couldn't be finished - right here - at this stage.

Could have been more gutsy to do that. But that's not what happened.

Instead, I pressed on, adding more texture as I went. This pic too, too, could have been a junction to quit - but such was not to be.

Only one more post to see what the final *finished* Tree looks like.

Watercolor Tree, Phase Two

Using Doc Martin's watercolor dyes here.

Unfortunatly they tend to fade over time, so they won't look as vibrant as they do right here, while their wet.

Using a fan brush here to add some more texture.

Watercolor Tree, Phase One

I've posted this before, but I figure it's worth re-posting.

I have to surrender control with Watercolor, so there's lots of room mistakes.

But any mistakes can also totally change the course of the paintings.

Wet - in - Wet . . . this will become something.

. . . actually it already has,

this is an old pic of me starting a painting

that's was finished many years ago.

'De Stijl' is an art style I did my own bastardized version of here.

I have to thank Jon Way$ak for pushing me to do things outside of what I'd normally do in the Chickens project.

Here's another example from Eleanor.

Even if it fails, i still never wanna be afraid of trying something new.

Looking Back . .

Digging through some of my moldy old art . . .

 . . I cancel myself, trying to find a mainstream style . .

but also reverting to my Distorted/Underground/Abstract pre-super hero roots.

I kept gravitating towards a few basic shapes . .

. .  looking to pour all the detail into those simple geometric shapes.

floundering, struggling, hoping one day . .

. . . to Break Through,

. . and find a style of my own.

Healthy Appetite

. .  taken from the PDF.. (which explains the red lines).

Sorry for the late post today, juggling a lot of non-comic stuff on my plate right now.

Promise to get my act together a.s.a.p.

Venus de Mommy/Nola/FOM Thumbs

This second page is a visual blue print, guiding me for the last twenty years on the 'Venus/Nola/Friends of Maxx' saga.

Each pink 'box' is a 20 page issue/chapter.

Lots of artists do do thumbnails to layout their stories, but mine tends to look like messy color-filled 'mind maps'.

Not to be morbid, but it's ironic to think that, if i die unexpectedly, this page would be meaningless to anyone else.

All those years of sweat and toil, for nothing.

Good reason to get off my ass and finish the sucker, eh?

Pitch Art . .

. . . for yet another unpublished project.

. . everybody's sketchbooks are full of this stuff.

. . little seeds which never fully sprouted.

Everyone has a pet . . .

. .  even the baddies,

Eleanor has her bird,

The Detective (not on this page) has his cat,

By the way, that worm-like creature is supposed to be a pet 'Lamprey eel'.

Watercolor Tree

With all the stress in the world these days, isn't it funny that something as simple as

this . . .

can help.

One of my faves..

"Mysteries of the Twout-a-verse"

Someday . . . before I croak . . I'll have to publish this sucker.

It won't make a dime, but it'll be a total labor of love.

Airboy Cover

Early eighties cover I did for the Chuck Dixon's 'Airboy' comic, published by Eclipse.

My art here was influenced by Dave Steve's Rocketeer series.  Knowing my grasps of clothing texture which were still pretty clumsy,  I tried to distract from that with shadows and a lush forest foliage background.

Uncle Artie...

 - in his yellow outfit.

from Batman-Maxx issue 4.

yes, I know its way late,

and yes I *promise* it'll be finished a.s.a.p. ... !

Early Sample Page . .

Distorted Batman Fix

I'd like to say I behaved myself and drew Batman less distorted/goofy in these older books,

But truth is, older or new,

I deliberately *enjoy* drawing Batman looking a little distorted and goofy.

Batman-Maxx ~ Finished Page

Wanted to thank everyone for their patience on the last two issues of Batman-Maxx which I'm *finally* finishing now . . . at the same time.

In this page, the Outback critter Maxx thinks he's attacking,

is instead, really a couch on a public sidewalk.

Same old Maxx.

You can compare the Half Finished Version HERE too.

Worth a second look . . .

I usually don't plug my own books, and I''m not saying this just because I drew it . .

. . but 'Eleanor & The Egret' is a book really worth checking out.

Plus my old pal John Layman (of 'Chew' fame) really out did himself in writing this one.

Old Maxx piece.

Though my fans were very cool about commissions,  I quit drawing them because I didn't like the pressure I put on myself of trying to please others.

So now I just draw Maxx stuff just to please myself.

Much better that way.

One of the few times I drew Spider-man.

This was done as a DVD extra for the Sam Raimi movie.

Drawn during my vintage 'duck tape' phase.

Many Thanks

I just wanted to say big *Thank You* all the cool folks who dropped in and said 'hey' to me during this last batch of signings I did a few years back.

And even if you didn't get a chance to see me at a signing, just know that all the warm supportive words/thoughts/feelings you've shared with me . .

way from the MCP & Maxx days . .

all the way up til now. . .

they really DO help keep me going.
