Maxx Influence: Bill Reid

Pacific Northwest Coast Inuit Art Style made it's way into this later Maxx cover.

Always a huge fan of Bill Reid's Haida artwork

Birth of Puella.

The Bimbo is a combo of three things:

1. A sexist male fantasy, (much like a stereotypical hunk in a romance novel).

2. Puella: Jung's eternal feminine side of a man, (think female version of Peter Pan).

3. A Selkie, a mythical creature who's a seal in water, but assumes human form on land. Except my version is a pink seal who's born from a Cosmic Sea of Bubble Gum.

Abandoned Projects: Moortje

Another shelved project i wanted to do was a graphic novel about Anne Frank's cat, Moortje ( yes, I know i miss-spelled the name in the logo ), which kept running away.

The idea was a non-verble story of all the  adventures the cat would have trying to find its way back to Anne. Course there was a ton of logistical reasons this never happened.

So now . . .  it lives out it's life as a small thumbnail image,
in one of my dusty old sketchbooks.

Batman panels

~ not Batmaxx pages this time, just a couple panels from a short story I did in Batman a few years ago.

I was lazy and left the rest for the colorist to color.

Sorry Ronda.

Of Moms and Red Eyes.

Two pics of this one. The Red Eye first appeared in Ojo, with Annie assuming a creature in a drain pipe was her late mother.

That theme continues when Nola see's the eye as a symbol of some flaw within herself, which is assumes is connected back to her mom.

Btw, I personally have nothing against Mom's in general,

or Red Eyes . . either.

Face from the Nola Mini Series.

It's not a traditional comic book, so i'm not sure exactly what the Nola story is anymore,

but it's definitely weird.

Marvel Comics Present . . .

No idea why Marvel punched a hole in the original art.

kinda weird, huh?

Came across this . . .

. . old sketch of these two.  Can't remember what (or who) it was for.

Maxx came out a little dodgy, but I think Julie sorta looks okay.

kinda cool

Obscure fact: We used a King Crimson song in the broadcast premier (unlike the dvd version) of the Maxx animated series on MTV.

I very much doubt Fripp, Levin or Belew even knew about it, but I came across this note at bottom of the Beat wiki page:

nice.

Batman-Maxx panel.

Tried something slightly different Joker here, a little softer (non digital) . . .

from the Batman-Maxx mini series.

*  don't worry, I removed the page '9',  in the corner on the finished file.

uh . . least I think so.

Moldy Epicurus

This is what happens when you leave your old art in the back of the closet for too long.
( see bottom of art board )

Horse Maxx, and other Controversies.

At first Horse Maxx wasn't very popular in the Maxx comic. Course the idea Maxx was a bunny underneath his mask horrified fans too, let alone the fact Maxx's mask was originally a lamp shade.

All sorts of goofy stuff that fans clamored against 25 years ago,

no one seems much bothered by now-a-days.

Epicurus Comparison

Here's a b&w (then colored) version of the first Epicurus cover, and on the right, . . .

. . then a painted version of the same cover I tried earlier, which I abandoned because it looked to washed out, plus the pillar seemed too distracting.

Variant Sandman Cover

Here's some pencils I did for a new Sandman Cover -

And here's the inked & finished Sandman Cover, along with a quote from me about it.
